Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
Overview
- Establishment: The first IIT, IIT Kharagpur, was established in 1951. Since then, several other IITs have been set up across the country.
- Autonomy: Each IIT is autonomous, governed by its Board of Governors and functioning under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
- Admission: Admission to undergraduate programs (B.Tech.) is through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced), while admission to postgraduate and doctoral programs is through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) and other national level exams.
- Campuses: There are currently 23 IITs spread across different states in India.
